Digital TV Broadcast to Start This Year

The migration process from analog TV to digital TV has entered the stage of registration for prospective digital TV broadcast provider or as the government mentions it as Institution of Multiplexing Broadcast Operator – Lembaga Penyelenggara Penyiaran Multipleksing (LPPPM). The registration process is already opened since June 5 and will end at June 18. Kontan reported that currently 14 companies already registered as digital TV station.

The government, through Ministry of Communications and Information Technology will do a selection from the registered institutions. Institutions that pass the selection and considered ready to conduct digital broadcast will be announced on July 31.

The Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology targets to have digital television station broadcasting at big cities this year. Nationwide, analog-switch off is targeted to be done on 2018.

Even though still in the selection stage, the 41 companies registering to get a right as digital television station shows that our television broadcast will be more diverse; with many television stations. Moreover, every broadcast institution will get 12 frequency channels for broadcasting. These channels can be used for them or leased to other parties. The increase of television stations is a benefit of migration from analog broadcast to digital broadcast.

The Ministry in a dedicated page for digital television also explained some benefits from this migration process. Among them are coverage area of digital TV which can be expanded, better quality of picture and sound and the possibility of increasing the diversity of broadcast content.
