Event Report: Gamelan 4th Meetup Event – My Game, My Idealism

On last Friday, January 27, 2012, the startup game dev community in the Yogyakarta, Gamelan, held their fourth meetup event. Gamelan 4th Meetup event is very exciting compare to previous meetup. The participants attended faithfully and waited until the event is over.

This time the event was attended by the game developer (programmer, artist, designer), students, and those who interested in the gaming field; most of them are living in Yogyakarta.

This Meetup is supported by SparxUp AwardsADGY (Asosiasi Developer Game Yogyakarta)MatchMoveAMD, and Quadra. As we mentioned in previous articles, Gamelan meetup divided into two sessions: main sessions and additional sessions. There seems to be an additional session/mini-session.

The main session filled by Jasson Prestiliano from Enthrean Guardian, Kornelius Heru Mukti from CornicleGames Chakra and the last was NightSpade.

Jasson from Etherean Guardian presented the early development of Eternal Grace Game and the released of Episode 1. Jasson also shared about the comparison of idealism which he has with the fact that he faced in game development. Even though it’s not all in accordance with his dreams but they are not discouraged. They precisely recorded the game development so that they can find solutions and learn from experience.

The next speaker was Cornelius of CornicleGames. He demonstrated the game engine and made it useful for facilitating the games development. Some kind of games that can be made with this engine are including: racing, puzzles, adventure and ‘typing’ game.

The next presentation was from Nightspade who presented the initial development of this game studios and games that they’ve produced. Some games that they produce have won in a competition like SparxUp Awards 2011, Indigo Fellowship 2011, etc.

The additional session is filled by several local game developers who have shown their homemade games including Creacle Studio, demonstrated the two games they made the Virtual Pet and Alay The Kite Runner. From StellarNull, demonstrated their games, Pixle, that included in the LudumDare48 event; Movin Studio, demonstrated their game made for Rolling Babaa iOS platforms.

There is also the Hajinguk Project (a study group that focuses on game development) that demonstrated their game, UFO Panic Panic, we’ve discussed it in DailySocial some time ago. And from Soybeansoft, they were again demonstrating the game that they’ve been developing, “the Hunter Story” and they officially launched open beta in this event. The Last is the Agate Jogja, demonstrated their game series, “Titok and his friends” (Titok Dan Kawan-Kawan-ind).

At the mini-session, there are short info from East Venture Alpha, MatchMove.com , GudangVoucher.com, MariNyanyi.com, Biznet, and Samsung.

From the Gamelan event this time, it can be seen that the potential for game development in Yogyakarta is very huge. The students of various universities are having high enthusiasm about game development. It’s also interesting to wait for a big event in the future, Jogja International Game Summit. This event may expose many potential players in game development scene in Yogyakarta. So, let’s wait for other event from Gamelan and various other gaming events in Yogyakarta. 😉
