Komikoo Releases Comic Game “Timun Mas”

The event Indonesia Bermain might be over just a week ago, but we’ve noticed something interesting, a new game developed by Bandung-based Komikoo.com. Komikoo is an showcase site for local comic illustrators where they can upload and showcase their comics and get feedback from viewers.

In the Indonesia Bermain event, Komikoo introduce a comic/game called Timun Mas (The Golden Cucumber). This comic/game combination is only in its beta stage but I immediately interested the first time I tried it.

This interesting idea of combining games and comics is not exactly new, I’ve seen some brands use this method for their digital campaigns. It’s an interesting experience to read comics and find a game-factor while you’re reading it that kind of decides the flow of the story.

To be able to enjoy this fine comic, you’d have to register for a Komikoo account and a panel on the right will give you clues for the game. It’ll also give you options and different items on each part of the comic. But the most apparent game factor is definitely the puzzle or labyrinth. The game provides at least two different flow and ending to the story, depends on users’ options.

I totally enjoyed playing this game, although I decided to skip the comic-reading part because I’m really excited to finish the game. This could problematic, since (probably) most user will do the same thing like I did (skip the comic) so probably Komikoo should pay attention for the game-comic balance in order to prevent viewers from total boredom.

I wonder if one of my favorite comics can be integrated with this game-type platform added with several surprising endings to give viewers some “in-control” feeling to the game. That would be awesome!

And of course this could be a good business potential, mostly some sort of advertising (banner/brand placements), merchandise or even an alternative premium version of the game. I have a feeling that brands would love to be promoted on games, as long as the game has enough traction.

As for Komikoo itself, they can keep their visitors on the site with these games, gaining traction and loyalty from its current users as well as recruiting new users. With their current fanbase, they could grow more than just a community of illustrators but also to an active comic and game enthusiasts. Of course they still have to maintain their current comic qualities and the addictive gaming elements can complement each other.

Definitely expecting lots of great things from this beta release of the game. Looking forward for the upgraded version.
