Perjalanan Duo Pemain CS:GO Indonesia di Paper Rex Hingga Juara eXTREMESLAND Festival 2020: Southeast Asia

2020 menjadi tahun yang tidak mudah, apalagi bagi komunitas CS:GO di Asia Tenggara. Tidak hanya turnamen offline yang kian jarang karena pandemi COVID-19 yang merebak di seluruh dunia namun juga kehadiran VALORANT, game FPS dari Riot Games yang mengadakan rangkaian turnamen esports resmi lewat kehadiran First Strike.

Meski begitu, masih ada beberapa pemain yang masih bertahan di CS:GO walau hampir semua pemain yang eksis saat ini berada di tim luar Indonesia. Sebut saja Hansel “BnTeT” Ferdinand yang baru saja resmi berseragam EXTREMUM (tim esports asal Rusia) dan Kevin “xccurate” Susanto yang diumumkan menjadi pemain terbaru dari NG Esports, tim CS:GO asal Thailand.

Namun, baru-baru ini komunitas CS:GO Indonesia patut berbangga akan pencapaian duo pemain Indonesia yakni Aaron “Mindfreak” Leonhart dan Jason “f0rsakeN” Susanto yang berhasil meraih gelar juara eXTREMESLAND Festival 2020: Southeast Asia bersama Paper Rex, tim CS:GO yang berada di Singapura. Kedua pemain ini sebelumnya pernah bermain di tim yang sama yakni BOOM Esports.

Bersama Hybrid, mereka menceritakan mengenai perjalanan mereka menjadi juara di eXTREMESLAND, CS:GO Asia Tenggara di 2020, tantangan bermain CS:GO secara kompetitif saat ini dan pendapat mereka akan BOOM Esports yang baru saja melepas tim CS:GO mereka ke MIBR.

 

Bisa diceritakan awal mula perjalanan kalian sebagai pemain professional di CS:GO?

Mindfreak: “Awalnya gua bermain CS:GO sejak Desember 2012 dan di tahun selanjutnya mulai bermain secara kompetitif. Di 2015 mulai berkarir di BDGS dan pindah ke Jakarta Juggernaut. Sempat bermain di Fortius bersama xccurate dan BnTeT, gua akhirnya menjadi stand-in di Kanaya Gaming hingga bergabung ke BOOM Esports di akhir 2016 sampai berpisah di Januari 2020.

f0rsakeN: “Awal karir saya waktu itu bermain bersama Recca Academy dan berhasil meraih juara 3 di turnamen LAN di Supernova Jakarta. Setelah berpisah dengan Recca dan bergabung ke Aerowolf Pro Team. Akhirnya saya dipinjamkan ke BOOM Esports hingga dikontrak secara permanen. Setelah dari BOOM, saya ditarik ke tim JMT dari China namun karena ada permasalahan organisasi, JMT diumumkan bubar dan akhirnya saya memutuskan pindah ke Paper Rex.

 

Bagaimana cerita kalian bisa bergabung ke Paper Rex?

Mindfreak: Gua bergabung ke Paper Rex setelah GeForce Pacific bersama BOOM. Setelah trial di bulan Januari, bulan selanjutnya bergabung sebagai pemain resmi. Sebelumnya, sudah mendapat tawaran lain dari Team Aster dan bahkan sempat trial di sana. Namun karena Team Aster ada 4 pemain China, saya memutuskan untuk menolak karena kendala bahasa dan memutuskan ke Paper Rex karena saya bisa menguasai bahasa Inggris.

f0rsakeN: “Saya dikontak secara langsung oleh DSN (pelatih Paper Rex) untuk menawarkan saya untuk menjadi pemain. Tanpa pikir panjang, saya menerima tawaran tersebut karena juga sudah keluar dari JMT saat itu.

 

Bagaimana perjalanan kalian selama turnamen eXTREMESLAND Festival 2020: SEA?

Mindfreak: “Sebelum turnamen ini, kami memutuskan untuk meningkatkan porsi latihan menjadi 8 jam sehari mengingat kami tidak latihan seusai liburan tahun baru. Kami juga lebih ke arah melihat tim lain bermain dan di waktu yang sama kami yakin dengan strategi kami yang lebih bagus hingga akhirnya menjadi juara.

ForsakeN: “Persiapan di turnamen ini, kami melakukan latihan, scrim, dan membahas kesalahan di latihan ataupun menonton demo dari tim luar negeri seperti Astralis, Vitality, dll.

 

Apa pendapat kalian mengenai CS:GO di Asia Tenggara?

Mindfreak: “Sebenarnya CS:GO SEA terbilang membosankan karena hanya bertemu tim itu-itu saja saat turnamen. Bahkan tim CS:GO SEA saat ini cukup sering membuat perubahan pemain termasuk kami di Paper Rex yang membuat tim CS:GO di SEA harus melakukan penyesuaian tim.

F0rsakeN: “Menurut saya CS:GO di Asia Tenggara untuk saat ini agak mundur untuk beberapa langkah karena game VALORANT yang sedang naik daun sehingga banyak para pemain CS:GO banyak berpindah ke VALORANT. Tapi saya berharap tim CS:GO Asia Tenggara bisa tetap eksis sampai sekarang.”

 

Lantas, bagaimana untuk wilayah lain di Asia seperti China dan Mongolia?

Mindfreak: “Mongolia justru malah semakin banyak tim CS:GO meski VALORANT merebak di Asia terlihat dari tim di turnamen ESEA yang didominasi tim Mongolia. Sama dengan China yang masih tetap aktif dan ramai tim Cs:GOnya karena gua sendiri jarang melihat pemain China di VALORANT.

f0rsakeN: “Justru sebaliknya dari Asia Tenggara, China dan Mongolia sedang berkembang pesat karena sedang menunjukkan dominasinya di berbagai turnamen CS:GO kancah Asia.

 

Menurut kalian apa tantangan bermain CS:GO sebagai pemain profesional untuk saat ini?

Mindfreak: “Turnamennya lagi jarang, tidak sebanyak dulu buat Asia. Ditambah lagi adanya COVID membuat terkadang bosan bermain CS. Ditambah lagi seperti yang gua bilang sebelumnya, lawan-lawannya yang itu-itu saja.

F0rsakeN: “Tetap bertahan dengan tujuan saya secara pribadi untuk bisa menembus turnamen major CS:GO dan menjadi tim nomor satu Asia.”

BOOM Esports baru saja melepas roster CS:GO mereka ke MIBR. Apa saran kalian terhadap manajemen BOOM, apakah lebih baik melanjutkan di Brazil, Asia, atau kembali ke ranah Indonesia?

Mindfreak: “Kalau saran gua sih tetap bertahan di scene Brazil ya buat CS:GO BOOM. Selain scene yang terbilang jauh lebih sehat secara kompetitif, komunitas mereka juga terbilang sangat aktif. Dibandingkan kembali membuat CS:GO di Asia, itu hanya membuang uang saja. Selain CS:GO yang meredup di Asia, pesaing CS:GO saat ini yaitu VALORANT juga memiliki roadmap yang lebih jelas terutama di kawasan Asia Tenggara

F0rsakeN: “BOOM Esports harus tetap eksis di CS:GO karena game ini masih jadi tolak ukur esports skena internasional. Mungkin saat ini pemain CS:GO Indonesia yang bersinar sedang berkarir di luar negeri namun tidak menutup kemungkinan bila saatnya tiba mereka akan kembali berkarir di Indonesia.

 

Southeast Asians Teams in PMGC 2020 According to 3 Shoutcasters from 3 Countries

After competing for almost 1 month, PUBG Mobile Global Championship 2020 officially ended their League stage with Four Angry Men as their champion. One of the Indonesian representative, Bigetron Red Aliens that held the top position for 3 weeks fell to second place. Besides that, all of Southeast Asia teams proceed to the Grand Final on Coca Cola Arena, Dubai, UEA.

Apart from Bigetron RA and Aerowolf LIMAX (Indonesia), other SEA teams that managed to qualify are RRQ Athena, Secret Jin, and POWER888 KPS from Thailand, and Team Secret from Malaysia. Southeast Asia becomes the region that sends the most representatives in the Grand Final.

Preparations have to be done by each team to deliver the best performance in only less than 2 weeks. Bigetron RA even has to bring a new player, Leander “Liquid” Deusfiel as a 5th player, to replace Alice who’s unfit to go to Dubai.

We talked to 3 PMGC 2020 casters from 3 different countries to share their opinion about SEA teams in PMGC 2020 and their prediction on the Grand Final. They are Florian “Wolfy” George from Indonesia, Suphakit “Zaffer” Nonta from Thailand, and Azrul “J Hunter” Anwar from Malaysia.

Wolfy’s opinion about current PUBG Mobile SEA teams in PMGC 2020: “In my opinion, the SEA teams already proved their class when all of the teams made it to the Grand Final. Having the most experience and being the most competitive region make the players honed their skills better than other regions. The only region that I think is on the same level as SEA is China.”

The weakness of PUBGM SEA teams according to Wolfy: “The weakness of the SEA teams is that they are adapting quite slowly. Meanwhile, teams from other regions such as China, America, and Europe could change their playstyles (rotation and decision-making) adapting to different situations. This weakness could be seen in the middle of the season and has to be fixed in the Grand Final.”

Wolfy’s prediction on the SEA teams in the PMGC 2020 Grand Final: “My prediction, all Southeast Asia teams should be able to reach top 12 with Bigetron RA and RRQ Athena have bigger chances to be the champion. Four Angry Men  and NOVA XQF from China are the strongest contenders for the SEA teams to win the title.”

Zaffer’s opinion about current PUBG Mobile SEA teams in PMGC 2020: “In general, I admit that all of the Southeast Asia teams played really well so they could go to the Grand Final in Dubai. The Grand Final rounds will be fun to watch. It’s a little bit hard to compare but, in my opinion, all of the SEA teams are still a little bit better compared to Chinese teams.”

The weakness of PUBGM SEA teams according to Zaffer: “It’s hard to see the weakness of the SEA teams currently. It’s all about momentum and timing in PUBG Mobile. I believe all the teams in the Grand Final are very strong teams. They have weaknesses, for sure, and it depends on who makes fewer mistakes.”

Zaffer’s prediction on the SEA teams in the PMGC 2020 Grand Final: “All 6 SEA teams have a chance to be the winner. My heart says RRQ will be the champion but, looking at the facts, Bigetron has a real chance to win the PMGC 2020.”

J Hunter’s opinion about current PUBG Mobile SEA teams in PMGC 2020: “I think SEA teams have the best chance to conquer the top positions especially in offline settings. SEA teams have the most experience in LAN events. In multiple showings, SEA teams have determined the metagame, and they are also prepared mentally inside and outside the game so they are less susceptible to taunting, mental fatigue, etc.”

The weakness of PUBGM SEA teams according to J Hunter: “Sometimes SEA teams have a do or die attitude and will rarely back off from a fight. This is both strength and weakness but sometimes SEA teams tend to overextend when in teamfights.”

J Hunter’s prediction on the SEA teams in the PMGC 2020 Grand Final:: “I believe SEA teams will all be in the top 10 with RRQ and Bigetron in top 3 on Grand Final PMGC 2020.”

Prediksi dan Pendapat Caster PMGC 2020 dari 3 Negara untuk Tim-Tim SEA

Setelah berlangsung selama hampir 1 bulan, PUBG Mobile Global Championship 2020 akhirnya mengakhiri babak liga dengan menobatkan Four Angry Men sebagai juaranya. Bigetron Red Aliens yang sempat memimpin sepanjang 3 minggu jalannya liga harus puas berada di posisi kedua. Meski begitu, pencapaian positif berhasil diraih oleh tim Asia Tenggara mengingat semua perwakilan berhasil lolos ke grand final yang akan diadakan di Coca Cola Arena, Dubai, Uni Emirat Arab.

Selain Bigetron RA, tim SEA yang berhasil lolos yakni RRQ AthenaSecret JinPOWER888 KPS dari Thailand, Team Secret dari Malaysia, dan terakhir ada Aerowolf LIMAX yang menjadi wakil Indonesia lainnya selain Luxxy dan kawan-kawan. Pencapaian ini membuat Asia Tenggara menjadi region yang paling banyak mengirimkan perwakilan di grand final.

Tentu berbagai persiapan dilakukan oleh masing-masing tim untuk bisa tampil maksimal saat grand final nanti yang tinggal menyisakan kurang dari 2 minggu. Seperti contohnya Bigetron RA yang tidak hanya mendatangkan Leander “Liquid” Deusfiel sebagai pemain ke 5 untuk memperkuat tim namun juga menerapkan karantina sebelum menuju keberangkatan ke Dubai mengingat pandemi COVID-19 yang masih merebak terutama di Indonesia.

Mengamati akan hal ini, kami berbicara dengan 3 caster PUBG Mobile Global Championship 2020 dari 3 negara berbeda. Mereka adalah Florian “Wolfy” George dari Indonesia, Suphakit “Zaffer” Nonta dari Thailand, dan Azrul “J Hunter” Anwar dari Malaysia.

Pendapat Wolfy mengenai kondisi tim PUBG Mobile Asia Tenggara menjelang PMGC 2020. “Menurut gue tim-tim Asia Tenggara sukses membuktikan kelasnya karena semua tim berhasil lolos ke Grand Final. Memiliki pengalaman terbanyak dan menjadi region paling kompetitif membuat mereka lebih terasah kemampuannya dan membuat mereka lebih baik dibanding region lain. Satu-satunya region yang bersaing ketat dengan SEA adalah Tiongkok yang menurut gua satu level dengan SEA.”

Kelemahan tim PUBGM SEA yang perlu diperbaiki di Grand Final PMGC 2020: “Kelemahan tim SEA ada di adaptasi yang cukup lambat ketika tim dari region lain seperti Tiongkok dan tim asal Amerika dan Eropa yang berubah gaya main seperti dari segi rotasi ataupun keputusan untuk fight dari tim. Hal ini terlihat dari pertengahan musim dan menjadi PR yang perlu dikerjakan semua tim SEA nantinya di Grand Final.”

Prediksi dan opini Wolfy mengenai tim SEA di Grand Final PMGC 2020: “Prediksi gua untuk tim SEA PMGC 2020 pada kali ini harusnya bisa masuk 12 besar semua. Bigetron RA dan RRQ Athena yang memiliki peluang terbesar untuk menjadi juara. Four Angry Men dan NOVA XQF yang menjadi pesaing kuat tim SEA untuk merebut gelar juara.”

Pendapat Zaffer mengenai kondisi tim PUBG Mobile Asia Tenggara menjelang PMGC 2020: “Secara keseluruhan saya mengakui bahwa seluruh tim SEA bermain sangat baik hingga akhirnya berhasil lolos ke grand final di Dubai. Tentu Grand Final yang akan berlangsung di Dubai berjalan menyenangkan. Meski begitu saya harus mengakui tim SEA masih sedikit lebih unggul dibanding tim PUBGM asal Tiongkok.”

Kelemahan tim PUBGM SEA yang perlu mereka perbaiki di Grand Final PMGC 2020 : “Sulit melihat kelemahan tim SEA saat ini, PUBG Mobile bergantung dengan momentum dan timing. Saya percaya seluruh tim yang berhasil lolos ke Grand Final merupakan tim kuat. Tentu masih ada kelemahan di setiap tim termasuk tim Asia Tenggara namun semua bergantung dari siapakah tim yang membuat sedikit kesalahan.”

Prediksi dan opini Zaffer mengenai tim SEA di Grand Final PMGC 2020: “Dari semua 6 tim Asia Tenggara, mereka semua memiliki peluang untuk menjadi juara. Hati saya sebenarnya mengatakan RRQ namun jika melihat dari fakta, Bigetron memiliki kesempatan untuk menjadi juara.”

Pendapat J Hunter mengenai kondisi tim PUBG Mobile Asia Tenggara menjelang PMGC 2020. “Menurut saya tim SEA saat ini memiliki kesempatan yang sangat baik untuk merebut gelar juara terutama PMGC 2020 memakai sistem offline. Tim SEA memiliki pengalaman terbanyak untuk turnamen offline. Bahkan di berbagai turnamen, tim SEA yang menentukan meta game. Selain itu mereka juga lebih siap secara mental dari dalam maupun luar game yang membuat mereka lebih tahan terhadap taunting, kelelahan mental, dan lainnya.”

Kelemahan J Hunter mengenai tim PUBG Mobile Asia Tenggara yang perlu diperbaiki di Grand Final PMGC 2020: “Terkadang tim Asia Tenggara memiliki sifat hidup atau mati dan jarang mundur dari pertarungan. Hal ini menjadi keunggulan dan kelemahan namun terkadang SEA Team cenderung overextend.”

Prediksi dan opini Zaffer mengenai tim SEA di Grand Final PMGC 2020: “Secara pribadi saya yakin seluruh tim SEA bisa menembus 10 besar di Grand Final nanti dengan RRQ dan Bigetron berada di 3 besar.”

Indonesia’s Fighting Game Esports: Excluded yet Refused to Die

We can say that 2018 is a year of esports awakening in our homeland, and esports itself actually has a lot of game genres from MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena), FPS (First Person Shooter), Battle Royale, Sports, Fighting, CCG/TCG (Collectible Card Game / Trading Card Game), Racing, and many more.

In the unfortunate fact, this awakening is spreading uneven between all genres. MOBA is the most played games thanks to Mobile Legends and Dota 2. Fighting game is one of esports genres that one could say is still marginalized.

We’ll discuss about other genres some other time, as for this time I’ve invited Co-Founder Advance Guard Bramanto Arman, a figure of fighting games, to share his story.

For those who are unaware of the esports world, Advance Guard is an icon of fighting game esports in Indonesia. When many are doing MOBA, Bram with the Advance Guard are raising this genre keenly since this icon was established in 2012.

According to Bram, Advance Guard is a place for fighting game community to gather. Tekken community, for example, which is mostly from IndoTekken, and Street Fighter which is mostly from IndoSF.

Thanks to their hard work and persistence, several tournaments conducted by Advance Guard have successfully claimed an official certificate from CAPCOM (for Street Fighter series) and Bandai Namco (for Tekken series) as a qualification tournament at international level.

Indonesia representations who would like to compete in CAPCOM Pro Tour and Tekken World Tour have to participate in the tournament conducted by Advance Guard first.

Of course, those achievements cannot be taken lightly anymore, in fact, there’s no any other higher authority than them in the world of Indonesia’s fighting game esports.

Esports fighting game popularity in Indonesia

As I said before, esports fighting game in Indonesia is lack of an exposure, and Bram knew it.

“The exposure is lower than any other popular games with a huge number of player base in Indonesia,” said Bram. He added that this happened because of the game’s factor.

Bram explained that esports games enthused among Indonesian players are the addictive freemium games so that players might forget oneself and shop at the in-app purchase.

“Eventually, they saw many Indonesian players playing those games and created a big event from that. The games are Mobile Legends, AoV and PUBG Mobile.”

Meanwhile, for PUBG (PC), Bram sees a place that possibly can accommodate the gamers, like various types of iCafe. Therefore, many gamers can try the game without having to buy it; they only need to pay the bill at the iCafe. It has also happened to Dota 2.

Esports fighting game popularity outside the country

If esports figthing gamepopularity in Indonesia is low, how about in the other countries?

Bram said that people in another country were also showing low interest in fighting game esports, compared to any other popular games and one of the biggest esports fighting game events in the world, EVO, also began from the same story.

They initially conducted an event for the community full of passion. As the development of esports, however, now EVO is on the same level as most esports events having their match in a stadium with festive production, and get a lot of sponsors.

Thanks to EVO’s struggles, many big EOs that didn’t even go near fighting games before began to take interest in it.

Bram then added that fighting game esports should actually be popular as people would be easier to enjoy the games even if they’re newcomers, and I personally agree. As if we compare it to a MOBA match, we wouldn’t really enjoy watching the match if we didn’t even play and understand the game itself, while fighting game is an easily watchable game even for newcomers.

Outside the country, fighting game esports are way bigger than here, despite its lack of popularity. Bram told us about his experience visiting REV Major, the biggest fighting game tournament in Philippines, and he saw great enthusiasm not only from players but also from audiences willing to come even if the tickets were quite pricy.

Even fighting game esports has gotten some supports from several celebrities like the wrestlers Kenny Omega and Saviour Woods, as well as the American rapper Lupe Fiasco.

Advance Guard’s struggle on keeping Indonesia’s fighting game esports alive

The question is with the lack of popularity, why Bram and Advance Guard are willing to stay and fight for this esports? Why they just don’t shift to another popular game like most Event Organizers (EOs)?

“Because our approach is different,” Bram answered straightforwardly.

“It’s a fact that other EOs are mostly commercial, so they’re looking for mature markets, while I come from and for the community. So, I’m fighting for the community to keep them alive. It’s indeed hard and difficult as we’re lacking support compared to other popular game.

Most people think that watering barren land is useless; it’s better to harvest fruit that’s there,” he said figuratively. Bram chose to keep on watering the barren land until a leaf is finally growing, and so he does because of his love to fighting games.

The result shows now how Advance Guard has its own identity and stand as the icon of fighting game esports. They started from a small scale of a community and now become the international benchmark.

That said, from the business side, Bram admitted that Advance Guard’s journey was far from other EOs who were prefer working on popular games to get more profit.

According to him, big EOs from other countries usually collaborate with those used to the field concerned and it happens in Malaysia, Philippines, and Thailand.

“That is the ideal way of working on an esports. Meanwhile here, sometimes we don’t really get along and fight over some sweets instead… Hahaha,” said Bram joking.

The things esports fighting game in Indonesia needs

What are the things that Indonesia’s fighting game esports needs?

First of all, in terms of exposure, there are still so many games and esports media that don’t cover fighting game esports events. “It tends to be covered only by some media that have their interest in fighting games. Most media would write about fighting game esports if it is a huge event. As I know, IGX (Indonesia Game Xperience) is one with the most writings about it.”

According to Bram, the readers of fighting game news are still segmented compared to the popular games. Whereas, on the other hand, many things can be brought up from fighting games, like national and international professional players.

Moreover, the players of fighting games from Indonesia are actually able to compete at the level of Southeast Asia. Bram told us that several times ago, Indonesia representation was taking home the trophy of BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle and BlazBlue Central Fiction competition in Philippines.

That said, to be able to successfully get achievement in Asia or even the world, Indonesia players still need a lot more practice. This achievement is yet worth a praise considering fighting game esports lacking of exposure and support.

Then how about the support for local esports organizations? Can it help develop fighting game esports? Given fighting game division of some esports organizations has not yet been much established.

“In my personal opinion, it might happen to be a boost of help; as long as there’s potential and passion from the players. Sponsors can give them a chance to compete abroad for some experience,” explained Bram.

He added, “Unavoidably, they need to compete abroad to raise their own standard.”

Recently, a fighting game player was invited to join Alter Ego and we might see the result from their teamwork later.

I then asked, what would happen if the players of fighting games also get monthly salary just as Dota 2 or Mobile Legends players? Would it help them achieve more?


Bram stated that now fighting game players had gotten their salary but just from a stream and it’s not much. “It’s a business after all. So I think we need to find a win-win solution for all.”

This condition is more suitable for those who’re still studying / a fresh graduate and have their passion in fighting games, and it won’t be as much suitable for those adult, as the career path might not be worth the pain.

The biggest problem of having a career in esports is parents’ concern and permission, as the prizes are not as high as MOBA games yet to make sure that their children would not live in despair in the future.
