The Importance of Local Flavor

Localizing Internet services seems to be a thing lately as Dropbox today announced that it has added support for six more languages. Starting today, Dropbox can be used in Indonesian, Malaysian, Traditional and Simplified Chinese, Russian, and Polish, across all versions with the exception of iOS. Additional language support for iOS will come later. Just the other day we reported that Cubie has also added Indonesian language support.

Path Adds Seven New Languages Including Indonesian

Path announced on its blog today that it has added seven new languages to its localization options. The social network that limits connections to no more than 150 friends understands that internationalizing its app may assist with adoption in markets with non-English speakers and therefore has added Dutch, Norwegian, Traditional Chinese, Thai, Indonesian, Malay, and UK English. These additions mean Path is now available in 16 languages, including Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese, French, Swedish, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

Back in April Path sought out assistance from all around the world to make its app more international and from the list of countries it laid out, it still has four more languages that are yet to be ready to roll out at this point. Those languages are Arabic, Russian, Turkish, and Norwegian Bokmål. To use Path in a different language, you will need to set your device to your desired language. The setting is not from within the Path app.

Path has been a relatively popular network, gaining three million users since it was relaunched back in December last year and as The Next Web noted in March, despite having fewer users than other markets, Asia has been Path’s fastest growing region. The addition of Traditional Chinese, Thai, Malay, and Indonesian will only help to spur further adoption in Asia.

Situs Foursquare Versi Bahasa Indonesia Tampaknya Masih Perlu Perbaikan

Foursquare’s Indonesian apparently still needs work

Earlier I posted about Foursquare’s latest app update which brings support to five more languages to the location-based service. Within the apps, it looks like the translation job was pretty spot on. It didn’t trip on the usual pitfalls that tend to catch non-native speakers unawares. Unfortunately the same can’t be said of the website.

As I said in the previous post, the apps may well present very little challenge as the scope of the translations was relatively limited and there were no large blocks of text that had to be translated with the majority being just one or two words, the longest being just a sentence or two. The website however, clearly presented a much more challenging task.

Foursquare updates its apps to support five more languages

Foursquare iPhone app INAJust as we posted the other day, the latest updates to Foursquare’s mobile apps carry with it support for Indonesian, Russian, Thai, Portuguese, and Korean. These five new languages join French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, and of course, English. The breadth of support gives Foursquare native language for more than 1.5 billion people, though the majority of which obviously don’t use the service, but at least it’s there for those who want it.

While we were only informed of the changes to the BlackBerry app, today’s update actually brings the additional language support to the iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry apps. To switch languages you’ll need to set your device’s language to your own. Apps that have support for your choice of language will switch along, those who do not will remain with its default language, most of which would be English. If you’re not keen on using your local language on your device then there’s no need to bother.
