Harpoen Launches Version 2, Emphasizes on Discovery

Harpoen Ltd. today launches Harpoen 2.0, a significant overhaul of the “digital graffiti” app launched back in March 2012. Eschewing much of the interface of version 1 but still keeping the overall look and theme, Harpoen 2 is the result of a rethinking of how the app is being used by its most active users as well as maintaining the idea behind the app which aims to get people to leave notes, messages, remarks, and memories about particular places.

New Koprol is Coming Soon

The startup that once became the pride of Indonesian digital ecosystem  is coming back to life. The revival of Koprol, following the shutdown by Yahoo on August 28, is marked by its new revamped site — still accessible from the old Koprol.com. There’s no further update on the site yet, but anyone who would like to become beta tester for this new version of Koprol may tweet to @koprol by telling which town will he/she be representing to. The trademarks and domain names of Koprol is now, as expected, associated to Barito Labs, founded by three former Koprol co-founders.

Harpoen Mencoba Pasar Amerika Serikat

Harpoen Heads to the US

Should local startups aim high and try to hit the overseas market or should they stick to the local scene and serve the local consumers? The answer clearly depends on the product and the resources available to the founders but it’s something worth thinking about. The majority of Indonesia’s tech startups are aiming at the local market. Nationalist sentiment is very high in the country and most startup founders aren’t interested in tackling the international market for various reasons.

Yahoo! Koprol to Relaunch In May, Refocuses on Neighborhoods

DailySocial made our way downtown Wednesday morning to Yahoo Indonesia’s offices at Sentra Senayan II to take a sneak peak at what the people there were up to. Hours earlier came news that Sunnyvale is going to wield the axe this week over 2000 employees across the globe. A massive layoff is coming. The mood at Yahoo Indonesia though, showed nothing of the sort. Instead, we were greeted like it was any other day and they still held meetings, discussions, and doing things as per their daily grind.

We’re not going to talk about the layoffs though. We were there to check out what they were doing with Koprol, the location based service that Yahoo bought back in May 2010. We have written plenty about the service from cheerleading them to admonishing them for having fallen far behind the competitors and even against the new kid on the block, Path. We were shown what they call Koprol 2.0. If you think the redesign that they did last year was 2.0, it wasn’t. This is a major rework. The core of Koprol is still there but it’s a brand new service that more accurately reflects how Koprol is actually used by the majority of its users.
