We got the information that in Kenya there has been launched a new payment solution in the form of Virtual Payment Card. Your mobile phone can be available to make payment as credit card or electronic wallet to do the international online transaction.

This is the first pilot project in the world which is supported by well-known financial institution, Standard Chartered Bank and MasterCard. This service is provided by mobile operator, Airtel Africa, and called as PayOnline and the payment will be done through Airtel Money—it is similar to Telkomsel Cash or XL Tunai in Indonesia.

It is not difficult to use it. First, the user needs to order shopping card (which works like credit card) through menu available on mobile phone. Next, Airtel service will generate 16 digit number. The transaction will be done when the purchasing has been authorized. This is should be done within 24 hours for security reason. This 16-number works like credit cards with certain limit (the limit can be set and pre-paid, per transaction, or daily). It is also available for foreign exchange including US Dollar, Pounds, or Euro.

Kami memperoleh informasi bahwa di Kenya diluncurkan solusi pembayaran baru berupa Virtual Payment Card. Ponsel Anda dapat berlaku sebagai kartu kredit ataupun dompet elektronik dan bisa digunakan untuk transaksi online secara internasional.

Ini merupakan pilot project pertama yang di dunia yang didukung oleh institusi finansial ternama, yaitu Standard Chartered Bank dan MasterCard. Layanan yang diusung oleh operator ponsel Airtel Africa ini dinamai PayOnline dan pembayarannya menggunakan Airtel Money — di sini serupa dengan Telkomsel Cash ataupun XL Tunai.

Penggunaannya tidak sulit. Pertama pengguna memesan nomor shopping card (yang bertindak seperti kartu kredit) melalui menu yang tersedia di ponsel. Berikutnya layanan Airtel akan men-generate 16 digit nomor. Transaksi selesai begitu pembelian berhasil diotorisasi dan harus digunakan secara perdana dalam waktu 24 jam pertama untuk menjamin keamanannya. 16 digit nomor ini dapat berlaku sebagai nomor “kartu kredit” dengan limit tertentu (di mana limit ini bisa diatur dan dibayar di muka, baik per transaksi ataupun harian) dan dapat digunakan untuk bertransaksi dengan mata uang asing, termasuk US Dollar, Pounds, ataupun Euro.
