Going Global: Privy’s Expansion Gets a Boost from New Strategic Investors

Privy has announced its collaboration with strategic partner Okta Ventures to strengthen its international market expansion. Okta Ventures participated in a $48 million Series C funding round for Indonesia’s digital trust company, led by global investment firm KKR. The investment and strategic engagement will enable Privy and Okta to expand their global reach.

Privy’s partnership with Okta and Auth0, which share its vision of a world where secure access to any technology is available to everyone, will provide certified digital identity with verified electronic certificates at the highest level of verification for Indonesian citizens. This will enhance the security of Okta and Auth0’s customers’ authentication and offer more seamless services.

A secure and reliable digital infrastructure is becoming increasingly important in today’s rapidly developing digital economy. Due to their anonymous and borderless nature, digital transactions demand trustworthy digital infrastructures such as a private cloud database, data encryption, digital identity verification, and certified digital signature. To minimize threat, digital identities should be verified independently by a trusted third party like Privy.

Privy’s CEO and Co-Founder, Marshall Pribadi, said, “Privy’s certified digital identity and digital signature with Okta and Auth0’s solution in managing secured yet seamless digital identity authentication will be a powerful tool in providing trust for parties who conduct their business digitally.”

Senior Director of Okta Ventures, Austin Arensberg stated that Okta Ventures is delighted to support Privy’s goal of ensuring the safety and legality of all electronic business and personal transactions. “We couldn’t be more excited to support the Privy team as they continue to innovate in customer identity and leverage Okta’s expanding Asia presence,” he added.

Starting in Australia, Privy will expand worldwide, following in the footsteps of its large verified user base of over 37 million in Indonesia as of December 2022. Privy is quickly becoming the most important strategic partner in Indonesia, thanks to its rapidly expanding user base. Privy’s partnership with Okta Ventures will help the company achieve its goal of going global and giving everyone secure access to any kind of technology.

Where Should You Launch Your Startup?

Here’s a question that crossed the minds of a number of founders and other friends I’ve talked to over the last several months, would you be better off launching your startup locally or should you try to get traction overseas and bring that back home? For a number of startup founders, the answer can be pretty clear because their product is market specific, but for those whose products are applicable worldwide, would it be better to gain local traction before heading out?

[Music Monday] Taking OpenEMI’s Torch And Taking It Further

On April 22-24, 2012, a conference aptly named Rethink Music was organized by the Berklee College of Music in Boston. They basically brought together professionals from all over the music industry – from media, from the music labels, from artist management, and even from technology companies like Youtube, Rhapsody and Echo Nest (you can look at the whole speaker roster here). But one of the most interesting things announced and discussed at Rethink Music, in my opinion, is OpenEMI.

The basic concept of OpenEMI is to provide access to startups who want to create music applications and services based on EMI’s music library – and if the app is interesting enough, EMI may partner with the startup to develop it further. You can either request for a access to a wide range of songs, or request deeper access to single artists with more audio, video and other content. This developer-friendly system is supported by Echo Nest, the company that also has a wider-range API for music applications that power services like Spotify’s Radio feature.

Incubation and Mentorship Programs Flock to Indonesia

For the past few months, we’ve been seing the number of incubation and mentorship programs starting to educate tech startup founders in Indonesia. We have local ones such as Merah Putih Inc (DailySocial is involved here), East Ventures Alpha, Jakarta Founder Institute, Project Eden, Telkomsel Bootcamp and numerous other similar programs.

These programs have existed since the beginning of the year and for the past few months it seems obvious that lots of entities want to tap this growing industry. Tech companies, telco/carriers and giant holding groups were amongst the most excited to start these programs and of course in-line with their business model.

2010 was the year for investors flocking to Indonesia and I happened to have met several of them as they went looking around the market, meeting people, looking opportunities to invest in Indonesia. Conclusion: the market is ready, the startups are not. These investors never came back, they were dissappointed. I told them that currently Indonesian tech startup scene needs mentorship, we’ve got some brave talented entrepreneurs but they’re still young and need guidance from mature entrepreneurs. And by “guidance” I don’t mean taking over their company.
