Tencent Join Forces With MNC, Enters Indonesian Online Market

Tencent, a Chinese investment holding company whose subsidiaries provide Internet and mobile phone value-added services and online advertising services just announced a strategic partnership with an Indonesian media behemoth, MNC.

The partnership between the two giants is basically aiming Indonesia’s growing domestic internet consumption and online entertainment. As a part of the deal, MNC will provide Tencent a competitive advantage by promoting their products and services via MNC’s media channel, while Tencent will provide the technical knowledge and experiences in the same industry in China.

Hary Tanoesoedibjo, MNC Media’s CEO said in a statement “MNC Media and Tencent shall collaborate to be a major new media player in the area of online communication and online games industry in Indonesia, a promising market for internet business due to its large population and young age demographics”.

To kickstart the partnership in Indonesia, both parties started to promote Tencent’s popular chatting and social networking app, WeChat. It’s not clear how they will promote WeChat and gain marketshare in Indonesia, but with the size of each company it’s not going to go under the radar.

Before partnering with Tencent, MNC Group also partner with Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten to bring the services to Indonesian market. Although being very dominating in the traditional media space, MNC took the fast yet expensive way to grow its knowledge about internet and online media.
